Alumni Mentor Series at GHS
On May 14th, Gimli High School recently hosted the GHS Alumni Mentor Series presentation, bringing together students and former graduates to share experiences, career pathways, and life lessons. All Grade 10 students participated, in addition to the Grade 11 Physics class and the Grade 12 Psychology class.
Three guest speakers returned to GHS to speak with students: Matthew Sandquist, an electrician and business owner; Carter Johnson, a professional hockey player; and Dr. Bailey Groot, a family physician. Each presenter shared their unique journey from high school to their current career, offering insight into both the challenges and successes they encountered along the way.
Throughout the presentations, students gained a better understanding of the different paths that can lead to success and the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and continuous learning. A common theme that emerged from all three speakers was the value of building strong relationships, networking, and leaning on family and community supports.
Students were able to connect with the presenters as diverse role models, helping bridge the gap between school and future career opportunities. The event also highlighted how valuable real-world experiences and mentorship can be in helping students reflect on their own goals and aspirations.
Gimli High School extends its sincere thanks to the alumni presenters – Matthew, Carter, and Bailey – for returning to share their time, stories, and advice with students!
