"Wisdom begins in wonder"~Socrates
I am incredible honored to be the Principal of Sigurbjorg Stefansson School and every day I try to emulate through my words and actions the school and culture that I believe should exist for every child to flourish. I grew up in Riverton which is a half an hour north of Gimli, close to the shores of Lake Winnipeg, and alongside the beautiful Icelandic River. I have lived in the Interlake all of my life, except when I attended the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg to become an educator. I have taught in Evergreen for 30 years, and have taught Kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 4 and Grade 3. I have also been involved with the Manitoba Department of Education with developing curriculum for the province. Throughout my career, I have presented to other educators and university students on various topics such as Math, ELA, and Information & Technologies infusion. More recently, I have been presenting on Education for Sustainability, Leadership, and Contemporary Learning Competencies. I was Assistant Principal for six years at SSES before becoming the Principal in 2010. I absolutely love children and they energize me everyday with their innocence, intelligence, kindness, enthusiasm, and holistic view of the world. What I love most is their curiosity and sense of wonder about people and the world in which we live. They are incredible role models for all of us adults!
I thrive working with people of all ages, to help make our community and our world a better place to learn and grow together. I come from a large family of five and I have been very happily married for over 30 years (I was married the same year I became a teacher in Evergreen). I am the proud mother of two beautiful daughters who were raised and educated in Gimli. My daughters, Brittany (25), and Ali (22) both graduated this year-Britt from nursing and Ali from education. My husband Paul recently retired from being an educator in this division for 34 years and is loving working from home with his educational consulting company (and squeezing in some golfing, fishing, skiing, and snowmobiling trips in when time permits.) I love music, art, dancing, nature, reading, cooking, skiing, being physically active, gardening, boating, decorating, traveling and playing the piano. My favourite thing to do when I am not working is to spend quiet time at home with my family. I believe that collaborating with families, students, colleagues, and the community enriches our learning environment and helps our students to not only achieve their full potential, but to live a beautiful, meaningful life. At our school, we embrace authentic, inquiry based learning environments and work diligently to ensure that our students have opportunities to be participatory, social justice oriented, and contributing citizens of a democratic society. Please come by our school or call me anytime if you have any questions or concerns about SSES!!
